The role of cultural imperialism instigated by the globalization of cinema coupled with the political climate of Japan at start of Japan’s film industry provides reason for the presence of Western culture in the East. In 1868, thirty years after the Meiji restoration, which resulted in the modernization of a previously feudal system, Japan’s film industry took root. From the outset, there were two popular genres among the Japanese population; the period drama, or the jidai-geki and the modern social drama that was often inspired by traditional Japanese Kabuki theater.3 Both were genres that Kurosawa dabbled in frequently.
